My approach to Counselling & Psychotherapy

I am a strong believer in the idea that there is no "one size fits all" approach to therapy, and I am someone who values the similarities between people from different backgrounds while celebrating their unique experiences and their individual differences. With this in mind, I trained in Integrative Counselling as to weave together different  approaches, with the hope of creating an unique therapeutic style, that can be adaptable and flexible as to meet the needs of my clients.  Below are the pillars of my therapeutic approach:
Humanistic (person-centred) approach: this combines and emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard and authenticity in the therapeutic relationship. It supports the idea the every one of us has the inner potential for growth. By using the humanistic approach as a foundation to my therapeutic stance, I am striving to prioritize the person's subjective experience, by fostering a non-judgemental space where people feel fully understood and accepted.
Narrative therapy: this component of my approach focuses on the stories people tell themselves about their lives, with a strong emphasis on how these narratives shapes one's perception of the world and their identity. Narrative therapy helps people to identify their values, their skills & inner resources and to reframe their stories in a way that promotes empowerment and change.
Systemic Therapy: this looks at individuals in the context of their relationships, considering the various systems (family, social circles, work environment) that influence behaviour and well-being. Systemic therapy helps us to understand and address issues not just in the individuals, but across their network of relationships, promoting changes that are supportive and sustainable.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured approach, that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours that maintain the vicious cycles people may get stuck in. It provides practical strategies to help managing specific problems, helping people to develop coping skills and facilitates adjustment in dealing with life's challenges.
By merging these approaches, I can tailor my approach to suit the clients' individual needs. For example, I may use narrative techniques to help clients explore and rewrite their personal stories, while integrating CBT strategies to challenge unhelpful thinking styles or rigid core beliefs that arise within these narratives. At the same time, the humanistic stance allows me to ensure that this work is carried in a supportive & empathic environment, enhancing the client's self-awareness, while systemic therapy will give us the lenses to understand the systems in which these narratives occurred. However, I integrate in my work creative & play therapy, carefully tailored for children or young people who would find it easier to express their inner world in a more creative way.
This holistic approach not only addresses immediate or enduring psychological difficulties, but also promotes long-term wellbeing by empowering clients to understand and reshape their life stories within a supportive therapeutic relationship.
